Macquarie Uni to virtualize computer labs

Macquarie University has decided to us virtualized desktops in their student labs. The project is called iLab and will allow students to use the VMware View Client applications on Windows, Mac and linux PC’s.The iLab would be like a personal computer laboratory  on the internet. This would be useful for students who do not need hands-on technologies for research work. One of the issues with the iLab project is the software licensing which they are investigating on a case-by-case basis. In fact the VMware backend allows the university to keep track of software license use across users.Similar projects have been undertaken using VMware View at universities globally.

As this study shows(http://www.vmwaregrid.com/Education/jcom/assets/White_Paper_-_CDE_-_Higher_Ed.pdf) desktop virtualization lowers costs, reduces the carbon footprint and provides better access to campus computing resources.
